Cold, arctic air has pushed into Upper Michigan to start out your Friday, along with blustery winds and even lower wind chills.
Air temperatures dipped to the teens below zero this morning in the western interior, through cities like Iron River and Iron Mountain. Wind chills have been approaching thirty degrees below zero. At these readings, it takes just over 10 minutes for exposed skin to feel the effects of frostbite.
Eastern counties weren’t left out of the cold, as temperatures plunged to near zero. Stronger winds pushed wind chill values there into the negative teens to near twenty as well.
Moving into the weekend, the cold air won’t budge much. Lake effect snows will taper off this afternoon as weak high pressure tries to nudge in. However, a weak low will then swoop through towards tomorrow morning bringing light widespread flurries.
This will allow the cold air to stick around for Saturday and Sunday, with neither day likely seeing highs above the low teens.
Looking into next week, though, there is light at the end of the tunnel—more seasonable temperatures should return by Tuesday, with readings touching the low 20s once again.
