MARQUETTE -- An award winning journalist visited NMU's campus to talk to students Monday about the vision of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Joan Morgan is a former executive director of Essence Magazine and is recognized as an expert on the topics of hip-hop and feminism.
She spoke about what she thought Martin Luther King, Jr. would think of race relations in 2011, whether or not the United States had become post racial, and changing the idea of diversity to represent the differences in cultures, not just race.
"Dr. King, who was really brilliant at connecting the dots between the different kinds of people, he would rise to that challenge and he'd be excited by it and try to figure out language that would actually motivate us towards unity," said Morgan.
Morgan's presentation was the kickoff to a week's worth of activities at NMU to celebrate Dr. King's birthday.
