Winter dangers to pets

ESCANABA -- Icy streets and dipping temperatures don't pose threats for just humans.

There are a few things to be mindful of when it comes to caring for pets in the winter.  Short-haired breeds lose body heat very quickly, so putting a jacket on your dog will help prevent hypothermia.

Dogs are also just as susceptible to slipping and falling on an icy street, so be sure to use a leash for more control when walking your pet.

Escanaba veterinarian, Dr, Marlene Mackie, says there's something else to be concerned about, as well.

"Antifreeze is a real concern this time of the year as well, because it drips out of engines, and people are changing antifreeze.  So it drops on the garage door, and it drops on the parking lot.  It's very sweet...dogs and cats will lick it," said Mackie.

It only takes about a teaspoon of ingested anti-freeze to cause significant kidney disease and failure in cats and dogs.
