ISHPEMING -- A 35-year-old Ishpeming mother is in custody at the Marquette County Jail after allegedly stabbing her 11-year-old daughter.

Merja Karita Lehto is charged with attempted murder.  Her bond is set at one million dollars.

At 11:30 p.m Thursday night, Ishpeming Police officers responded to a 911 call from Lehto's husband.

The daughter suffered stab wounds to the upper abdomen and chest.  She was transported to Marquette General for emergency surgery.  Officials expect her to make a full recovery.

It all happened in the 400 block of Oak Street, a location officials say is typically very quiet.

"The last time we had a stabbing, it was a drug deal gone bad," said Chief Jim Bjorne of the Ishpeming City Police.  "This is the furthest thing from that.  There's no drugs or alcohol involved whatsoever.  We're still trying to piece together the reasons why this happened."

Lehto's next court date is set for January 21.
