MARQUETTE -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment is putting the word out for their new recreational passport program this year.
October 1 of last year marked the beginning of the program, which consists of motorists paying an extra $10 when they register their car to have access to all state parks.
2011 will be an adjustment year for the DNRE as those with registrations later in the year will be able to enjoy the parks for free.
However, the department has high hopes that this new program will benefit both the parks and those that use them.
"We're optimistic that some non-traditional users will check yes, and it could lead to a more stable funding source to help the Michigan State Parks and Recreation areas and those other outdoor recreation venues," said DNRE Supervisor, Richard Hill.
Those who sign up for the recreational passport will also be enrolled in the "Passport Perks" program and will receive discounts from various Michigan businesses.
