Faster rescue times
MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP -- When firefighters are on the scene of a fire, every second counts, and a thermal imaging camera can help speed up the search and rescue process, seeing through smoke and locating flames.
The Marquette Township Fire Department is getting two new thermal imaging cameras after winning a $17,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant.
The department currently has one 10-year-old thermal imaging camera that is far less advanced, and they say the two new ones should help decrease their search rescue time.
"In the 10 years we've had this original camera, the technology on thermal imaging has increased twenty fold, and we've gone from purely black and white imaging to color, and because of color, they can show significant temperature, differentiate in different colors, and it makes it much easier for us," said Marquette Township Fire Marshall Ron Demarest.
The new cameras are also half the size and weight of the old one, making them much easier for firefighters to carry around.
The cameras should be delivered next month.
