It may seem like common sense...with colder weather, we put on more layers before venturing outdoors

MARQUETTE -- But there are certain things that are important to know when dressing for the cold.

During the cold winter months, you have to be prepared when you're going outside, and that starts with what you're wearing.

"Clothing is equipment, so if you have the right equipment, then you can actually encounter and deal with and actually be very comfortable in cold temperatures like this," says Todd King of Downwind Sports.

First, you should start out with a base layer, something like a synthetic shirt, then on top of that you're going to want an insulative layer, like a light down jacket; but if you're going to be active outside, one of the most important things you can have on is a shell jacket on top of both of those things.  Something like a heavier lined coat can help keep out wind, cold temperatures, and moisture.

The amount of layers depends on the level of activity, but it's imperative that all of your exposed skin be covered.

"Sweating is always an issue and so you have to kind of, by layering, if you're starting to sweat a lot and clothing you might be wearing are getting damp, by being able to take things off, you can cool yourself off a little bit," says Dr. John Lehtinen.

There are clothing products out there that are both fashionable and functional, like new down skirts.

And of course, hats and gloves are a must.

"Being well-hydrated, taking good care of yourself medically, are, I think, key things and then going out with the idea in mind that you're going to try and keep heat in and preventing cold from coming in and heat from going out," Dr. Lehtinen adds.

So before doing any sort of activity outside this season, just make sure you bundle up!
