One spectator received a special surprise
MARQUETTE -- Thousands cheered on the streets of Downtown Marquette Friday night as the New Year's Eve ball made its descent.
For many it was a night of partying. But for 20-year-old Shane Adelard Spring and 19-year-old Allison Gilmet, it was a night to make a special commitment to each other.
“I was expecting to come out here and just watch the ball drop with my friends and everything,” said Allison. “And then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, and (it was) last thing I was expecting, but I mean I’m so happy right now.”
In the midst of all of the yelling, cheering, and celebration, it was a smaller, but joyous, celebration with Shane and Allison’s friends.
"I guess it's been in his mind for a while,” Allison said. “And we've thought about it and talked about it before, but tonight's a special night, and I guess he decided to choose tonight."
Their relationship started two years ago and Shane is sure, Allison's the only girl for him.
"We met down in Rogers City one time, and then she came up to the Soo when I was going to Lake Superior up there with a couple friends,” said Shane. “And we just started talking after that and all the sudden we started dating. I mean, like I said, it's going on two years this year and it's a happy new year."
As a student at Central Michigan University studying secondary education, Allison doesn't want to put school on hold for her nuptials.
Shane and Allison plan to tie the knot in two years after Allison graduates.
