ALGER COUNTY -- Valley Spur ski trails are gearing up for one of their biggest cross country events in a little over a week, the Valley Spur Bash.

The race consists of three different courses through the Hiawatha National Forest, which include a classic 12K and 24K race and a 24K skate ski race.

The friends of Valley Spur say the event is a great way to prepare for the Noquemenon Ski Marathon later on in the season.

"People asked us do we have a warm up race for the Noquemenon race coming up, and so we've been trying to do that, and we have a lot of people here that are not really racers but they like to go out and say, am I improving this year," said David Worel of Friends of Valley Spur.

The race kicks off Saturday, January 8 at 10 a.m. and it costs $25 to participate.

To sign up, visit the Valley Spur website, or you can also register between 8 and 9:30 a.m. the day of the race.
