MARQUETTE -- It's a Christmas tradition dating back to ancient Rome. And today in America, it's still popular with generations, despite its bad rap.
We're talking about the fruitcake. But that bad reputation is really underserved, especially when you consider the fruitcakes from the Huron Mountain Bakery in Marquette.
The fruitcake weighs 2 pounds, and they've made 1,000 cakes. Each has pecans, cherries, golden and regular raisins, pineapple and, of course, candied fruit. The candied fruit is soaked in rum and brandy for nine days and they all sold in two weeks.
"I think the thing that really sets it apart is the fact that we soak our raisins and candied fruit, both golden raisins and select raisins, in a mixture of Jamaican dark rum and brandy. So I think people really enjoy the fact that there's a little happy in the bread or in the cake itself," said Bakery Manager, Benjamin Hayes.
The Huron Mountain Bakery also tops theirs with honey to preserve it.
So before you use that gift of fruitcake for a door stop or paper weight, you might want to take a taste and see what you're missing.
