SOUTH POLE -- Sub-zero temperatures and storm chasing is just some of what Frida and John have experienced over the past five weeks spent in Antarctica.

They went down there to witness a Condition One storm, a term that refers to the most severe weather conditions in Antarctica--winds greater than 55 knots, wind chill colder than 100 degrees below zero, and visibility less than 100 feet.

And as they travelled to the South Pole and back, the extreme weather is something they got used to.

"We just keep going out into it.  You don't really think about it too much, you've accepted it and it is what it is, and we have work to do," says Major.

They were out during what was confirmed as a Condition Two storm, but were still ready for the worst.

"We have to really be prepared because we thought we might end up being out at the field camp overnight," says Waara.

"Anytime that you actually hit a Condition One weather, you're pretty much locked down," Major adds.

There are more than 1,000 people permanently stationed at the McMurdo base where Frida and John were.  They say the workers that they met along the way helped shape their experiences.

When I asked her what her favorite memory was, Waara answered:  "I'm such a people person.  I'm just blown away by the people constantly, what they do in their jobs, and they do it because they love being here."

John's response?  "To be able to film some of them working in extreme environments like they do on a daily basis has been really inspirational to me as well."

While there, Frida and John were able to witness repairs being made on a $25 million telescope, just one of the many technological projects going on during their stay.

Frida and John return to the U.P. on Wednesday.
