HOUGHTON -- Even though it looks like Governor Granholm will sign the proposed legislation on moose hunting in the U.P, one Michigan Tech professor isn't hiding his opposition.

Rolf Peterson and more than a dozen other scientists signed a letter asking Granholm to veto the bill.  Peterson says moose hunting isn't right for the U.P.

Though it's estimated there are about 500 moose in the area, Peterson says there's no way to verify that number and feels there's obviously something preventing the population from thriving.

"Everywhere around Michigan that hunts moose, they have thousands, and they're getting worried," said Peterson.  "They're cutting back because of the obvious problems that moose are having.  Our legislature is going the other direction."

If the bill is signed, a council would conduct a one-year study to decide whether or not to go forward with moose hunting.
