Though he may not be Michelangelo, an NMU professor was recently commissioned to paint a mural above the tabernacle in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gwinn.
John Hubbard is a drawing and painting professor at NMU and was contacted through churchgoers who are admirers of his work.
Hubbard worked closely with the church during his research but completed the work at his home studio, then affixed the artwork to wall of the church.
"It was fun for me because I don't work, normally work, that big so it was a little bit of a challenge to do that, and I was a little apprehensive in the beginning, and after having done it, now I'm thinking that was a good experience. It was fun to do; I wouldn't mind doing it again," said Hubbard.
The church says the painting has been very well received and fits with their plan to decorate with sacred paintings by local artists.
