DELTA COUNTY -- The economy may be tough, but the Delta County YMCA is still pushing ahead with programs that enrich community life.

The program is called the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign and it helps kids grow in more ways than one.

"It's increased his socialization with the other kids.  He’s made friends," said Nyla Weide, whose son, Bridger, participates.  "The activities that are offered, even out of school, and it’s given him a start on school and kindergarten."

The program affects people on all levels, and for Gary Nash, the executive director of the YMCA, that hits especially close to home.

"It means a lot personally for me to see how the YMCA can impact individual families and kids," said Nash.  "It really has the ability to change lives, and that's one of the things that keeps YMCA work really so interesting and vital for me personally."

While the economy may be down, the need for this program has increased 15 to 20 percent in the last year alone.  But the YMCA is also committed to collecting more money to ensure that this program continues to benefit area kids.

The Strong Kids Campaign has been operating successfully in other YMCAs in Michigan for about 20 years.  It’s open to all families, regardless of income.  Fees for the classes, swimming, and gym activities are provided on a sliding scale, and this helps out in a big way.

"It’s really essential because the YMCA mission is to be available to everyone," Nash said.  "This program ensures that we're going to be there for everyone in the community regardless of their income."

The program kicks off in January, and Nash expects it to be a big success.
