Even though we're supposed to typically finish an entire prescription, more often than not, we're left with extra medication

ISHPEMING -- Saturday, Bell Hospital in Ishpeming was a designated unused medication drop-off site.

This is the first time the hospital has done something like this.

The idea is from members of HOSA, Health Occupation Students of America, who wanted to do a project where the community could drop off any unused medications to be disposed of by the hospital.

"A lot of the studies coming out now are showing that a lot of the medications are ending up in the groundwater, and they may have health effects, long-term, so we're trying to eliminate that from happening," says staff pharmacist David Poirier.

The hospital is considering holding the prescription drop off again, depending on available manpower and services.
