HANCOCK -- Hancock High School students are learning all about copper this week, and Thursday, those lessons included field trips.
One group of students spent their morning touring the historic Quincy Smelter site. Another group got to learn how local stones are turned into treasures at Keweenaw Gem and Gift.
The students each picked out a Lake Superior agate and Mexican geode which they got to cut, polish, and take home.
"I'm really enjoying it. I've never actually done anything like this before, but I think it's cool because I used to really like rocks. I think it's cool that we go to polish them and see how it's done," said Hancock junior, Stephanie Dunstan.
The copper lessons wrap up Friday with a panel discussion about current mining and copper-related topics.
