Care packages assembled in Marquette
MARQUETTE -- Service members stationed across the globe will soon be the recipients of some special items from the U.P.
Tuesday, "Great Giving: Care packages To Our Troops" program volunteers assembled the boxes for mailing. Necessary items, as well as U.P.-themed items to give troop members a taste of home are included in the packages. The items were donated by local business sponsors. The program is sponsored by Great Lakes Recovery Centers Inc., Cliffs Natural Resources, Eagle Radio stations, and mBank.
The original goal was to send 250 packages, but organizers say this year they may only have enough materials for 150.
"Everybody that you tend to start talking to, somebody is serving," says coordinator Michelle DeMitchell. "It's just a time for everyone in the community to band together."
They plan to continue the project next year.
People can still help out this year by providing the name of a U.P. service member. Names submitted in the next few days are still eligible to receive packages this year.
To submit a name, call DeMitchell at (906) 228-9699 ext. 14 or email her at Mdemitchell@greatlakesrecovery.org.
