More than 1,000 pounds of food donated to CLK Food Pantry

LAKE LINDEN -- Lake Linden students never let down their neighbors in need when it comes to the TV6 Canathon.

Monday morning it took several trips to load all of their donations into the trailer of our Canathon partners at Eagle Radio.  But even their impressive collection couldn't match the armfuls of food donated by students at Washington Middle School and Calumet Elementary School.

"We have food and some people don't, and I think it's important for everyone to have food," says Calumet student Amelia Klemett.  "I’m just happy for the people that get food now."

Shopping carts were needed to haul out all of the goods from grocery stores like Pat's Foods in Calumet.

At the end of the day, more than a thousand pounds of food was dropped off at the CLK Food Pantry, an amount slightly less than last year, but no less appreciated.

"I don't think people in the Copper Country can do any more," says Joanne Picciano, who runs the pantry with her husband.  "They do everything they can, and it's very helpful."

Of course the donations wouldn't be possible without the tireless efforts of the Eagle Radio team.

"Around here, everyone pitches in," says Deborah Hilscher.  "We happen to have the resources, and it’s a feel good thing to be able to help people in the community.”

The CLK Food Pantry is just the first to benefit from the Copper Country's generosity.

The Eagle Radio team will continue with collections in Houghton County on Tuesday and Baraga County on Wednesday.
