Despite poor economy, Delta Canathon efforts are successful
ESCANABA -- Food pantries went from bare, to bountiful this week in Delta county.
Over the past three days, local radio stations, WYKX and WDBC manned TV-6 Canathon donation stations outside of Elmer's County market, Super One foods, and Gladstone's Super-Value.
"We're small town radio and our job is to help the small town and that's what we're doing you know," said WYKX DJ, Mike Flavor. "We get involved in all these kinds of things and it's kind of great to be able to do that and use our services to spread the word so to speak, to get people out here to communicate to raise money for the people in need and there's plenty of them."
Just to give you and idea of how much food is being donated, one round of grocery store pickups consisted of about 680 pounds of food.
Despite an ailing economy, the response to the collection was surprising. A combined total of more than 8,000 pounds of food was donated to the Escanaba St. Vincent de Paul and Salvation Army.
"I've never seen a community rally like this county," said Salvation Army Major Bill Cox. "We've met our goal each Christmas and so that's amazing when you consider the times we're in."
Donations may be slightly down from last year, but the Salvation Army says they still got what they needed. They'll use a good portion of the food collected to make about 400 holiday gift baskets for those in need.
