What's the mood there as the Republican Party prepares to take over the House?
CRYSTAL FALLS -- Since returning to the U.P. over the weekend, 1st District Congressman-elect Dan Benishek has been reading...reading hundreds of pages in handbooks teaching him how to serve in the House of Representatives.
"I've learned how to do a lot of new things in my life, and I'm a quick study. I'm hoping to be able to be up to speed fairly quickly," says Benishek.
The freshmen orientation session covered everything from how to vote to how to escape in a terrorist attack.
Benishek says the orientation session was a lot like being back in college. Along with the other 90 plus new freshmen members of the House, he attended various classes, learning all of the different rules and regulations.
"Everything's new and finding your way around, getting lost, going from one place to another; it's a lot to learn, so I'm anxious to learn," he says.
He had the opportunity to meet House leaders and fellow members of Congress.
Although there wasn't much time to talk politics, Benishek says there was a little discussion about what's next.
"I was surprised. Everybody seems to be on the same page as far as cutting spending and decreasing the size of government and getting jobs back to their districts. I mean those were the focus of conversation throughout the whole week, so I'm pretty happy with that."
