SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY -- No decisions have been made yet about the future of the Schoolcraft County Jail.

In September, the county was told by the U.S. Department of Justice they had to get a plan in place to bring the aging facility into repair or face further court action.

This week, the study was presented to commissioners suggesting the best option is to build a new jail.  So all options are covered, the board asked for a bit more information, namely, what the costs would be to keep the jail as a holding facility only and house inmates in other counties.

It's hoped that information will be given to them at their next meeting, scheduled for November 29.  That's because no matter what decision is reached, a ballot proposal will most likely need to be put before voters in Schoolcraft County in February to cover the costs.

To do that, the ballot language must be presented by December 14.
