MARQUETTE -- It was an effort to keep kids safe on the slopes.

The Marquette General Women's and Children's Center, in conjunction with Kohl's and Marquette Mountain, hosted a Kohl's Cares "Heads Up on Safety" event Saturday morning.

Families learned more about ski and snowboard safety, and more than 100 children received certificates for a free ski and snowboard helmet.

In addition, Kohl's representatives presented a grant check for more than $20,000 to the M.G.H. Women's and Children's Center as part of its Kohl's Cares Program.

"It's so important for children when they're out on the ski slopes, whether they're skiing or snowboarding, to be able to have their heads protected.  It makes all the difference in the world if they should have any accident," says program director Cindy Ampe.

Since 2005, Kohl's has donated more than $127,000 to the Women's and Children's Center.
