MANISTIQUE -- Quick action averted a potentially deadly situation in Manistique Thursday morning.

According to Manistique Public Safety, around 12:30 in the  morning, a volunteer firefighter and a bartender heard a loud beeping sound.  They recognized it as a smoke detector and tracked the sound to an apartment at 209 1/2 South Cedar Street.

When public safety arrived, they found smoke coming from a window.  They gained entrance to the apartment and found a woman sleeping on the couch and carried her out to safety.

The woman, Tara Sample, later told rescuers she had fallen asleep after putting food in the oven.  The fire was quickly put out; major damage was contained to the oven.

Sample was taken to Schoolcraft Memorial for evaluation.
