KINGSFORD -- With only a small percentage of Americans donating blood regularly, the need is becoming greater than ever.
Tuesday, the American Red Cross held a blood drive at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.
Twenty-eight people registered to donate, and with walk-ins, the Red Cross was hoping for a total of 65 donors during the day.
Each donation can be used to save at least three lives and go to people in need. But at least one person had more personal reasons for donating.
"My stepdad has leukemia and everyday he gets a new bag of blood, and I want to be part of that, you know? I want to be that bag of blood for somebody when they need it," said blood donor, Laura Kent.
Blood drives are happening regularly in communities across the U.P.
