High winds from Tuesday and Wednesday caused thousands of people to lose power in Iron, Dickinson, and Menominee counties.
IRON COUNTY -- Heavy winds continued into Wednesday leaving a path of destruction behind it.
7500 WE Energies customers in Dickinson, Iron, and Menominee counties were without power Wednesday morning.
"This is unlike a normal storm where you have a very intense situation for a short duration and you have the opportunity to assess your damage and move on,” said WE Energies Local Affairs Manager Rod Miller. “This particular storm is very fluid. New damage is occurring as the old damage is being repaired."
Due to the weather Forest Park cancelled school for the day and Bates-Amasa Road in Iron County was closed Wednesday morning due to the amount of debris in the road.
Despite the problems police in Iron County said things have been running smoothly given the circumstances.
"This storm affected the entire Western U.P.,” said Michigan State Police Lieutenant Chris Shoelander. “Having one central dispatch in Crystal Falls in Iron County ensured efficiency."
WE Energies is asking for patience from its customers and due to the length of the storm outages may continue.
"As long as the winds are blowing like they have been blowing we're going to continue to see the outages reoccur,” Miller said. “In some cases it may happen to customers who already had their service restored earlier in this storm."
WE Energies estimates 2800 customers in the Iron Range Area are still without power as of Wednesday evening.
The high wind advisory will continue until 7 p.m. central time Wednesday night.
