MARQUETTE -- The Superior Watershed Partnership recently received a $36,000 grant to develop a model for potential wind power here in the U.P.

The goal of the study is to create a model for communities like those in the U.P. that wish to embrace wind power.

The Superior Watershed Partnership is also including Northern Michigan University students from the Environmental Science, Engineering Technology, and English Departments.

The study will take into consideration the uniqueness of U.P. terrain.

"Unlike a lot of areas in the Midwest where wind turbines go in farm fields, here in the U.P. it would be more rugged, hilly terrain, forested with streams, a variety of wildlife, etc.," said Carl Lindquist, Directory of the Superior Watershed.

The grant was provided by the Michigan Coastal Management Program.
