CALUMET -- With the centennial of the Italian Hall disaster coming up soon, the Keweenaw National Historical Park is looking to enhance the site and is asking locals for input.
The park held a public planning session for people who wanted to share their ideas of how the Italian Hall Park should be developed to memorialize the victims and educate visitors.
Seventy-three people were trampled to death when someone falsely yelled "fire" during a 1913 Christmas party, and the site where it happened still means many different things to different people.
"This meeting was positive; we didn't mire in the controversies, which are played out in all of the published material. I think it was productive, and I'm really pleased," said consultant, Marcella Wells.
Marcella Wells was hired by the park to talk with locals and historians and combine their ideas. She plans to submit a preliminary report by the end of the year.
