This is the first year for the collection effort

ISHPEMING -- The preliminary efforts of some Ishpeming organizations to make sure families in need have proper clothing, seem to be pretty successful.

Saturday morning, volunteers came to Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming to go out and collect bags full of winter clothes to be donated to the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul.

This is the first year the congregation put together the 'Keep Kids Warm' collection effort, and organizers say they were overwhelmed by the response of the community.

"It's not going to be long, and the temperatures are going to struggle to get above freezing, so we just want to make sure that the kids who want to go outside to play will be able to do it safe and warm and dry," says Pastor Scott Lindenberg of Wesley United Methodist Church.

If you're still interested in donating coats and other winter clothing items to the 'Keep Kids Warm' effort, you can drop them off at the Ishpeming Armory any night this week.

The clothes will be sorted this week, and families in need will be able to come and pick up the donations next Saturday.
