Part of a program called "Rip-it-Up"
MARQUETTE -- Two Marquette organizations teamed up Monday night to help eradicate an invasive species.
It's called "Weed Wars" and it's part of a program called "Rip-it-Up" which is a grant-funded effort carried out by the U.P. Resource Conservation and Development Council.
The Marquette Conservation District worked with local Girl and Boy Scouts to pull an invasive weed called the Japanese Barberry. The groups met at the Dead River to dig up and dispose of the plant to help restore part of the U.P.'s natural ecosystem.
"We're just doing this so we can help out the people in the Upper Peninsula, get them to know what the dangerous plants are around here, and know what the native plants are to make the Upper Peninsula a better place for everybody," said Michael Edwards of Boy Scout Troop 360.
Though the weed pulling season is just about over, organizers plan to have more events like this next spring.
