They want to raise awareness
MARQUETTE -- It's estimated that every 70 seconds, someone else is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Students from Northern Michigan University's National Students Speech, Language, and Hearing Association did their part to raise awareness Sunday afternoon.
A group was on the academic mall chalking stats and facts on the sidewalk and hanging purple ribbons on the trees.
Organizers say they hoped fellow students would get the message.
"Right now it's estimated that 16 million people worldwide have Alzheimer's--4.5 million being American citizens--and it's a disease that, unfortunately, the numbers keep growing. And we as a group are just trying to promote awareness, trying to get the word out and hope for a possible cure someday," said Association President, Jim McMahon.
The group also plans to visit assisted living homes and volunteer in November.
