Menzel Hill to spend more time in jail

MANISTIQUE -- The Schoolcraft County Jail inmate accused of trying to escape back in July will spend more time behind bars.

Thursday, 31-year-old Menzel Hill was sentenced to two-and-a-half years to fifteen years in prison.

Back in August, Hill plead guilty to conspiracy to escape while awaiting trial for a felony and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, with a minor in the car, second offense.  Before sentencing, Hill told the court he would like to get help for his alcohol addiction and feels the jail escape charges weren't fair.

He says other people were involved in the incident.  Hill's girlfriend, who spoke in court, agreed and felt he needed rehab more than jail.

Despite the statements, the judge kept within the sentencing guidelines.

No credit was given for days already served.
