MARQUETTE -- It's said that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
As part of October's National Domestic Violence Awareness month, the Marquette Women's Center is making sure they promote awareness.
Wednesday, they handed out purple ribbons to the local police departments to wear on their uniforms and display on their police car.
Organizers feel by having the ribbons displayed around the town, it can help prevent domestic violence.
"Promoting awareness is also a form of prevention. And so anytime we can get out in the public and talk about domestic violence, along with other subjects like sexual assault and bullying, it is a great way to make people aware of what's going on in the community and how they can help," said Coalition Coordinator, Mary Smith.
Marq-Tran buses will also be sporting ribbons this month along with the trees along Baraga Avenue.
