SAWYER -- It opened its doors in Sawyer in the fall of 2008.  In just two short years, the Global Response call center has secured long-term contracts with its clients that will allow it to hire hundreds of full-time employees.  Good news from a company that is known to hire local residents.

"I would say that probably 95 percent of the jobs that we've filled so far come right from the Marquette-Alger county areas, and we anticipate that that trend will continue," says Vice President of Michigan Operations, Lynn Lundquist.

And it's not just the creation of new jobs that make this expansion promising for the community.  Global Response plans to invest $3 million into their current facility at Sawyer.

"Global is utilizing a facility that previously ACN had occupied, so very ready made for this type of business--a wonderful reuse--and Global has some extensive clients across the world," explains Lake Superior's Community Partnership Vice President of Economic Development, Lois Ellis.

Most of the investment money will be used for technology upgrades, but it will also be used for renovations if necessary.  Currently, the call center is ready to house 150 employees at one time, but there is room to develop seats for 150 more, which may be needed since new employees are ready to start.

"We've recently just hired 35 people, just a week or two ago.  We have another class of eight that just started this week.  We are coming into our busy season where we will also hire a lot of temporary help on top of our year-round employee base," Lundquist says.

Although Global has already started the hiring process, they're expecting it will take off in 2011.  After that, more than 300 employees will be hired over the course of five years.
