A bridge 10 years in the making

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- It's a project 10 years in the making, and now the Marquette County Road 510 bridge is finally done.

Crews began work on the new bridge last September, stopping for the winter months, and then continuing this past spring.

The bridge opened for traffic last Friday.  The new bridge is 532-feet long and sits 100 feet above the water.

The project was funded with gas tax money through a government program that identifies bridges in critical need of repair or replacement.  The price tag was over seven million dollars.

"Planning stages started about ten years ago, I believe with this one.  It's been a long time coming, and it's great to see 510 bridge open to traffic," said Director of Engineering Kurt Taavola.

There is still some work to do on the bridge; crews will be doing some paving on the north end next week.  The expected completion date is November 1.
