MARQUETTE -- Road crews braved the rainy weather Thursday continuing work on the Commerce Drive extension.

The work will extend Commerce Drive across US-41 to Brookton Road, creating a North-South connect that will ease congestion.

Marquette Township purchased the median crossover that is being replaced and will have the traffic light in front of the Westwood Mall moved to Commerce Drive.

The project that began two weeks ago is a collaboration between state and local agencies.

"The project is a $500,000 project, $375,000 coming from the Category F Fund, which is all-season truck routes, and the other $125,000 is local matched from the road commission," said Director of Engineering Kurt Taavola.

The extension project is expected to wrap up by mid-October.
