Weather has been mild
MARQUETTE COUNTY -- After a mild winter and a mild spring, this past summer continued the trend. But while temperatures were certainly above average, it wasn't exactly hot, either.
"Our daytime temperatures, they were maybe a little above normal for the year, but it was actually the overnight temperatures which were warm. We had a lot of overnight temperatures that were in the upper 50s into the 60s, even a few days in the, you know...overnight temperatures only dropped to the upper 60s, lower 70s," said national Weather Service Meteorologist, Mike Dutter.
It was also a wet summer, which was definitely needed.
"Parts of the Upper Peninsula, especially the western Upper Peninsula, were in a severe drought, extreme drought for that matter, but it ended up being that the storm track set up to where we just were on the right side of a lot of these storm systems and had periods of moderate to heavy rain every week or two," Dutter added.
In addition to the warmth, higher humidity had people flocking to the beaches where the water was certainly inviting.
"Lake temperatures at one point were at record levels across Lake Superior, in fact, the buoys, I think, all three of the bouys were at or above 70 degrees at some point, which is pretty remarkable," Dutter exclaimed.
September, though, has been a different story with lake waters returning to near normal. And with leaves changing colors, it's a reminder that fall is already knocking on the door.
