KEYES LAKE, WI -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is working to contain zebra mussels found in Keyes Lake in Florence earlier this month.

Three adult zebra mussels were discovered, which is the first time in 10 years that the invasive specie was found in a northern Wisconsin lake.

Now the DNR is working to prevent the zebra mussels from spreading to other lakes.  They are advising people to properly clean their boats before removing or putting them on the water.

"There's not a model for how we go about with zebra mussels.  This is only the second lake in northern Wisconsin where this has been detected, so there's a lot of learning as we go, but one thing we do know is we need everybody to work together from the state to the county to the local lake group and volunteers," said Kevin Gauthier of the DNR.

The DNR will hold a public information session about zebra mussels and their affect on Keyes Lake, Thursday at the Florence County Resource Center.
