14 young ski jumpers compete without snow
ISHPEMING -- While the first snowfall may still be a few months away, that didn't stop junior ski jumpers from practicing their skills Sunday afternoon.
Suicide Hill in Ishpeming was filled with 14 ski jumpers competing in the Second Annual Autumn Ski Jump Competition.
The event featured two rounds on the 13 meter and 40 meter jumps. Jumpers were evaluated based on distance and style. For the kids, it's a great way to stay with the sport year round.
"The summer jumping is a fairly new thing and a lot of the clubs are moving to that to get exposure for the kids to jump year round," said club secretary, Bob Hendrickson. "It really helps them improve especially when the winter comes and the ski jumpers have transcended the snow. So it's the same equipment except that they're landing on a plastic landing hill instead of a snow hill.
Prizes were awarded to the top three places in each category.
