Many seasonal activities have noticed a boost in sales
MARQUETTE -- It may not go down as a record breaking summer, but it has been running on the warm side.
In the month of August, we saw 15 days with temperatures at 80 degrees or higher. Compare that with last year's August when only six days saw the mercury rise that high. So it's no surprise that more residents have been spending the dog days outside. You'd think the heat would be great for outdoor activities, but it has actually put a damper on some.
"We've had great weather, but at times, it's almost been too warm because that kind of curtails golf. People are seeking other things, like going to the beach and staying off the golf course for four hours when it's really, really hot, which sometimes it has been," explains Marquette Golf Club's Head Golf Pro, Mark Gilmore.
But it's definitely not too hot to enjoy ice cream. And sales have risen this summer.
"They've been real well. A lot of our customers have mentioned that they've been up as much as 20 percent for ice cream. It's been a great summer...right amount of heat, right amount of rain," describes John Jilbert of Jilbert's Dairy.
This summer may have seemed hot to the residents here, but it's still considered cool to other Midwestern areas, which is a good way to pull in tourists.
"We have a course here that attracts them from all over the country, to be honest with you. There were people here from Oklahoma here yesterday and a couple people here from California this morning. So they're seeking relief from the heat in their areas and coming to the U.P and having a great experience. So as hot as it is here, they think it's cooler, so it's great for us," Gilmore says.
While our summer may be coming to an end, it looks like our warm weather will be lingering just a little bit longer, so seasonal activities will continue to reap the benefits.
