MADISON, WI (AP) -- Wisconsin state wildlife officials say they've received more than 2,000 deer observations from the public over the last month.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources began its Operation Deer Watch program on Aug. 1.

The WDNR wants to use the program to estimate the fawn-to-doe ratio, an important piece of overall population estimates.

Over the past four weeks observers have reported 564 bucks, 497 unknowns, 1,226 fawnless does, 415 fawns without does, 493 does with one fawn, 456 does with two fawns, and 40 does with three fawns.

The public reporting period runs through sundown on Sept. 30.
