Graduates give back to community

IRON MOUNTAIN -- A historic piece of Iron Mountain was given back to the community Friday by some former graduates.

The Iron Mountain High School class of 1960 dedicated a 460 pound bell to the community.  The bell was used by the fire station over a 90-year period ending in 1993 to alert residents of emergencies, commemorate events, and notify of community curfews.

The bell has been in storage since 1993 and now can be found permanently in front of the fire station.

"It is a community thing," said class of 1960 member Bill Gammey.  "You know everybody has curfew, and for all the old people like me, there was a curfew back in our days so yes, it was important to the community to have something back that we had once before."

The project commemorates the class's 50th reunion, and all the money was raised by class members.
