MARQUETTE -- Many of us, of course, are making plans for a trip this weekend.  More people traveling means increased danger on the road.

The official Labor Day weekend begins Friday at 6 p.m. and continues through Monday at midnight.

Law enforcement officers wants you to know they're serious about keeping drivers safe.  During the Labor Day weekend, more troopers will be patrolling the roads, specifically targeting drunk drivers and those who are not wearing their seatbelts.

"Wear your safety belts, but zero tolerance on drinking and driving; remember, if we're your designated driver, you won't be going home at the end of the night," said Sgt. Kevin Dowling of the Michigan State Police.

Extra patrols will be funded by the Office of Highway Safety Planning using federal traffic safety dollars.
