Gary Veale honored in Negaunee
NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- The rain didn't stop dozens of Negaunee Township neighbors from honoring a friend of the community.
Thursday morning, the new baseball field behind the Negaunee Township Hall was dedicated to Gary Veale. Friends and family of Veale remembered him this afternoon at the ceremony.
Veale, who passed away three years ago after a long battle with cancer, spent much of his life serving the community. He was involved in a variety of areas of recreation from winter sports to the development of the ball field.
At the ceremony, his wife was given a replica of the plaque that is now on the field.
"When he was involved with something, he was very passionate," said Community Board Chair Patty LaFond, "and this was his passion...recreation for the community and the township."
The $180,000 project is now open for use. It is part of a five-year recreation plan for the township.
