Anyone can take to the stage and sing
MARQUETTE -- For some it's the chance to be the next singing sensation. For others, it's just a way to kick back and have fun with friends. Karaoke is popular in the Upper Peninsula, for both those who choose to sing and those who just want to listen.
"Well, it's neat seeing people just having a good time and having fun. The fun is the best part of it," explains Bobby and Erin Crandell of Marquette.
Karaoke translates as empty orchestra in Japanese...which means the song has no lead singer. So that's where the crowd comes in. Pick the song you'd like to perform from a library of hundreds, and sing your heart out.
A few favorite songs include John Travolta's "Summer Nights," the B-52's "Love Shack," and lots of country. And anyone who's willing to take the stage can be the star.
"Actually there are quite a few talented people who come out to sing. But then usually as the evening progresses, a lot of people's courage will go up as well," says Stan's Dry Dock DJ Pierre Ogea.
But no one's judging. If you're brave enough to grab the mic, chances are your efforts will be appreciated.
"It's a comfortable crowd here. Everyone's cool. They don't care. You don't have to be American Idol to do it," says singer Ryan Malandrone.
If you're still not brave enough to do karaoke on your own, you may find it easier to sing with a group.
