One local start-up business is booming
MARQUETTE -- Starting your own business is a daunting task, especially in tough economic times. But for Darron Watson, it was a way to regain employment.
"I was looking for work at the time, and then this business idea popped into my head about cleaning cars," said Watson.
Watson started Good Looks Auto Detailing, or G.L.A.D., and has been detailing cars for close to three months. An interior wash price depends on the size of your car, but an exterior washing fee for all vehicles is $20.
What makes Watson's business unique is he'll do the work at your home or business.
“He comes to your house,” said G.L.A.D. client Barbara Michael, “and if there's an emergency or even just some little thing--an errand that you have to run real quickly--I’ll give him a sandwich and I’ll say I’ll be right back.”
He began the business detailing his friend’s car for money for cleaning supplies and started distributing business cards and fliers to get the word out. But Watson said the most effective advertising has been word of mouth. He started his business in mid-spring and already had 25 clients. That's how Cathy Church found out about Darron’s services.
"I was at church one Sunday and Darron's girlfriend stood up and said that her joy was that Darron had started a new business in car detailing, and my car was trashed," said G.L.A.D. client Cathy Church. Now Church is a steady client, and she's spreading the word about Watson's careful attention to detail.
Watson says if business continues to grow, he may have to hire another hand. That's not a bad problem for an aspiring entrepreneur.
