ESCANABA -- It was cut from the state budget last summer, but with community support, the Perspectives Adult Day Care Center in Delta County is still open.

The program works with residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and this weekend, you can help keep this much-needed program stay alive.

Nancy's been bringing her husband, Bill, to Perspectives for almost five years.  Bill suffers from Alzheimer’s, and it's been a tough road.  But taking part in the program has helped them both.

"This place is just a blessing for us, and he comes to have fun," explained Nancy Roberts.  "Care providing is very stressful, and this gives me a chance to maybe read a book or relax."

From games to crafts to song, Perspectives helps local residents through mind strengthening activities.  Coordinators say they see up to 15 people a day.

"Perspectives has been around for approximately 20 years," said Supervisor Randy Daigneault.  "We've been in this location since December of 2008.  We moved because we needed a larger location.  We provide a respite service for those individuals taking care of their loved ones."

In May of 2009, the program was cut from the state budget, but grants and community donations have helped keep it alive.  And participants, like Nancy and her husband, are forever grateful.

"It's one of the few centers in our local community that is available," Roberts said.  "It is a unique agency and also it's a wonderful resource.  It's a fun, happy place."

And this weekend, you can also help keep it going.  Blues for a Cause is hosting a fund-raiser on Friday night for Perspectives.  The event kicks off at 8 p.m. at the Terrace Bay Inn in Gladstone.

All proceeds raised Friday night will go back into the program.
