The 'Iron Ore and the Civil War' encampment took place this weekend at the Iron Industry Museum
NEGAUNEE -- Eight costumed interpreters from the Battery D Reenactment group set up camp this weekend.
This particular encampment has been happening for several years now and is important in detailing how the iron range provided many of the tools and resources needed for production of weapons during the Civil War.
"It's a wonderful opportunity for us to look at the war from a little different perspective, and the mining operation and the support that came from the industry here in the U.P. that, quite often, is taken for granted, I think, so this kind of highlights that, lifts that up, and that's important," says Jim Newkirk of Battery D.
Visitors to the camp were able to see artillery demonstrations, 19th century children's activities, and even meet President and Mrs. Lincoln.
