Third annual U.P. Trek will end in Munising
GREENLAND -- A caravan of adventure-seeking, four-wheel drive owners is making its way across the U.P. this week.
The drivers will be taking in the sites along the way, but you won't have to worry about extra traffic on the roads; they'll be sticking mostly to off-road trails.
"I’ve always been an avid camper, mountain biker, and hiker, but you just can't get to places like this without a vehicle," says Frank Falcone.
The third annual U.P. Overland Trek started its four-day journey on Wednesday morning at the Adventure Mine in Greenland. Co-founder Tom Dolaskie says the trips are meant to encourage adventure tourism in the area by ending each drive at various historical and natural attractions.
"We have a couple of hot spots that are everyone's favorites, and we try to get back there every year," says Dolaskie. "High Rock Bay is a prime example. The sunrises can't be beat."
The U.P. Overland website has helped to grow the event's popularity.
About 64 people in 33 vehicles are participating in this year's trek, including Pat and Cindy Bonish, who traveled all the way from the Florida Keys.
"We used to vacation in the U.P. when we lived downstate, so we jumped at a chance to get back up here and experience something like this in areas we're so familiar with but have only mountain biked or hiked before," says Bonish.
The Overland Trek will wrap up in Munising this Saturday, but participants say the end of this adventure just means they can begin planning for next year.
