Celebrated in July
BARAGA -- Having Christmas in July may seem odd, but it's becoming an increasingly popular event at Baraga State Park.
More than 150 children participated in the Fourth Annual Christmas in July celebration this year. They got to go on nature hikes, make cookies, and decorate stockings. Saturday, the kids decorated their bikes and dressed up as elves for a bike parade.
And it wouldn't be Christmas without Santa. He and the Mrs. made sure to stop by the park and greet the kids on their way down south for summer vacation.
The biggest activity is the campsite decorating contest, giving the winners bragging rights for the rest of the year.
"The campers really love it. They get really competitive about it, and it's great just for local people as well to drive in and see the campground all lit up with Christmas lights," said Kelly Manthes of the Baraga State Park.
Organizers say this was the busiest weekend for the park in more than five years.
