May be not be enough to prevent layoffs and program cuts
LANSING (AP) -- Michigan's public schools should soon know how much financial help they're going to get from the state heading into the next academic year.
The State Legislature is expected to vote on a new school aid budget Thursday.
The measure basically keeps current funding levels for schools, though districts get a small increase of $11 per student.
That may be not be enough to prevent layoffs and program cuts at many schools across the state, heading into next academic year.
Lawmakers still haven't decided if they'll spend a projected surplus in the state's school aid fund. Some lawmakers want to use it to fill holes in other budget areas.
